Colorblind have released their debut full-length album “Who Sold You This Truth ++ Was It Yours To Hold” via Solid State Records and Tooth & Nail Records.
The album hosts an array of musical intricacies and surprises as it showcases all the ways Colorblind stand out in the alternative music scene. They have consistently forged their own unique sound and have perfected it with this release.
The songs’ themes revolve around self-discovery, regret, wonder, and repeating the same mistakes, with questions around identity, belief, grief and reflection. As they invite us into their musical world, they personalise our listening experience, speaking to us through the music and forming connections with the listener throughout. Their music remains raw and vulnerable as well as pop-forward and catchy, blending unique sounds effortlessly and perfectly.
The songs portray a sense of nostalgia but also provide futuristic melodies, with the band executing their trademark “Dreamcore” sound fully.
The album starts melodically soft yet synthesised, and quickly becomes double-timed as fast-paced notes with a sense of urgency play out instrumentally, highlighting one of the most unique voices in the alternative industry right now. Travis, the lead singer’s vocals, are consistently emotive; lyrics are sung out determinedly and hauntingly, becoming more emphasised for choruses. Altogether, the band creates music that spins in circles around your brain, with songs that will easily get stuck in your head for days.
The music becomes heavier as intricate riffs are introduced with intensive drumming, while vocals and lyrics stay prominent and thought-provoking, as well as viscerally relatable and deep. The tempo is surprisingly upbeat and becomes full throttle instrumentally at times; within this contrast lies raw emotional resonance. Layered vocals and strummed guitars lead to bridges with unique breakdowns.
Consistent overtones of melodically fused electronic chords ring out throughout, each note decorated with intricate layers of cleverly thought out sounds. Even the most pop-forward songs fluctuate distinctly between genres and musical styles, remaining honest to the band’s truly distinct style as they explore the darkest parts of humanity that we tend to hide away from the world, cathartically presenting it for the listener in deeply personal and universally relatable terms.
Musical frequencies that are uniquely distinct to them sound out experimentally. The band don’t rely on heavier sounds to overshadow complexities, as isolated vocals, staggered perfectly, remind us of a dream state, that feeling just before you fall asleep and are in between worlds, spiritually suspended.
Lyrics then turn staccato before going back to belting out, angelically, echoed screams ring out and lead us into more prominent ad-libbed vocals, delivered with emphasis in all the right places, taking us on this musically emotive journey. Elongated, no breaths taken, guttural vocals scream out, seemingly never endingly, becoming warped and reverberated as crashing instrumentals surround them.
Meticulously played chords ring out and ignite our senses, turning into complex intertwined melodies, cleverly put together and produced to perfection.
This album is consistently mood-changing, giving uncomfortable feelings and dark thoughts a meaningful reason as they’re brought to life creatively. Colorblind are consistently pushing boundaries and sounds as they enter bravely into different dimensions sonically.
This album sounds like it’s the clearest reflection yet of who they are, yet completely unpredictable throughout, leaving the future wide open for Colorblind.
Verdict: ๐๐๐๐
