Certain artists arrive on the scene with an unmistakable sense of momentum behind them and judging by the reception that greeted Sofia Isella at a sold-out o2 Institute Birmingham, she is rapidly becoming one of the most compelling young voices in the world.
Stepping onto a stage littered with instruments, guitars, a bass, a keyboard a violin and of course a banjo among them. Isella immediately demonstrated the breadth of her artistry. The setup itself reflected the eclectic nature of her music, that being alternative pop, rock, industrial, spoken word and honestly this list of genres goes on and on here. It also serves as a reminder that this performer’s talents extend far beyond simply standing behind a microphone.
From the opening moments, Isella displayed a level of confidence and stagecraft that belied her age. At just 21 years old, she commanded the room with an insane amount of authority. Effortlessly drawing the audience into her strange ol’ world. Whether delivering moments of delicate vulnerability or leaning into the more theatrical and intense passages of her material, she never allowed the energy inside the venue to ever drop.
A major part of that came from her exceptional use of the stage. Rather than remaining rooted to one single spot, Isella utilised every damn inch of the O2 Institute’s platform to her complete advantage. Moving seamlessly between instruments, engaging every section of the crowd and constantly finding new ways to bring her songs to life, she ensured the performance felt dynamic from the very beginning to the absolute end.
The setlist itself struck an impressive balance between fan favourites and beautiful surprises. Every song was met with a rapturous response, with the sold-out crowd cheering opening notes as loudly as closing chords and beats. The reaction never wavered throughout the evening, creating an atmosphere that felt less like an audience watching a performance and more like a room collectively invested in every moment made.
One of the night’s most touching moments came when Isella welcomed her childhood violin teacher to the stage for a special performance. In a set already packed with emotional weight, it provided a genuinely heartfelt reminder of the journey that has brought her to this point. The chemistry between the pair was evident, and the significance of the moment was not lost on the Birmingham audience.
As if that wasn’t enough, Isella also treated the crowd to a freshly written and as-yet unreleased song “vinegar”.
Introducing brand-new material can be a gamble, but the track was received with the same enthusiasm as the rest of the set. If the reaction in the room was anything to go by, it is a song that fans will be eagerly awaiting.
What continues to set Isella apart is her ability to make a sold-out venue feel intimate while simultaneously commanding it like a seasoned headliner. I should mention that this is Isella’s first headline UK/EU tour by the way.
The audience remained completely locked in from start to finish, hanging on every lyric that was sung, spoken, shouted and whispered. The crowd responded passionately to every song.
Again the most remarkable thing is that she is only 21 years old. While many artists spend years developing the confidence, presence, and artistic identity required to lead a room of this size, Isella already possesses those qualities in abundance.
If this performance was any indication of what lies ahead, Sofia Isella’s future appears exceptionally bright. More importantly, if artists of her calibre represent the future of music, then I am going to go ahead and say that everything is going to be absolutely fine.
