Mimi Barks returns with ‘Dreamstate Of Fear’, a release that pulls listeners deeper into the fractured and emotionally volatile world she has built. Itโs unique, dark, heavy, intimate and personified as it explores fear not as a weakness, but as a state of existence where anxiety, rage, isolation and survival collide.
Mimi Barks has built her sound from the collision of metal, industrial chaos and trap; she has excelled at exploring and creating โDoom Trapโ song offerings while consistently pushing deeper into the sounds of her music as well as the emotional weight and rage within it.
With โDreamstate Of Fearโ, she enters a new era, one that strips everything back to its rawest emotional state and fully embraces the darkness at the centre of the seven songs she delivers, which are genre-defying and sonically bending throughout, as she blends cultures and sounds effortlessly.
Rapped vocals, with trap flow lyrics, are delivered prominently until raspy, crackled screams ensue; for a time, held back until they fluctuate into emotive singing, warped and autotuned to a unique style and go quickly from stripped back to full throttle while sheโs treating both styles with undeniably defiant energy.
She has insane vocal control, range and impressive delivery as distorted aggression gives way to moments of vulnerability and emotional collapse, creating a body of work that feels both violent and deeply human. Consistently unique and honest, sonically sharp electronic sounds are delivered harshly and staccato and accompanied by evolving guitar riffs.
Tension and instability are woven through the songs, creating visceral reactions within the listener while sheโs making everything unmistakably her own, twisting and turning sounds for emotive effect to keep listeners engaged and enraged throughout.
Her vocal range reaches new, elongated operatic ranges while remaining constantly engaging and emotive. Sheโs hugely talented and not afraid to take musical risks and push sonic boundaries. As well as being multi-talented, sheโs also multilingual and raps in different languages throughout the E.P., ever surprising and astonishing listeners with a multitude of layers delivered within the songs, from her talents to her vocal styles and meanings behind the music.
Haunting vocals ring out before screamed ad libs are added to intensify the sounds. Intros to songs brace us for effect, and at times sound horror themed, the quiet part within the music become pause for effect to brace us before deep poetic spoken word is delivered, thought-provokingly. She creates songs that make you think while listening, but quickly move onto the next theme, with so many layers of depth and a lot going on at once, blending styles and contexts together with attention to all details within the tracks.
Nothing is polished, but itโs precisely delivered just as itโs meant to be in what could be her rawest release yet.
Verdict: ๐๐๐๐
