Manchester was pervaded by an atmosphere of expectation with the commencement of Orange Goblin’s concluding tour. The ensemble, opting against nostalgic sentiments or commemorative retrospection, committed unequivocally to sustaining a standard through the terminal phase of their three-decade career. The sold-out Manchester Academy 2, already supercharged by the preliminary acts Urne and Grand Magus, had achieved an intensely pressurised state significantly before the headliners’ presence.

As the opening act of the night, Urne promptly engrossed the capacity crowd with a performance characterised by both technical brilliance and profound emotional depth. The band commenced their set with Be Not Dismayed,” immediately asserting control over the room. Through their four-track sequence, the band exhibited notable versatility. โThe Spirit, Alive” provided a succinct surge of vitality, whereas โThe Burden” presented a heavier, almost introspective groove. The climactic moment of the night was the unequivocal โHarken The Waves,” delivering a profundity that offered an apt finale, instilling in the audience a desire for further output. Their forthcoming album is projected to be a landmark achievement, and for individuals not yet acquainted with Urne, the present moment is opportune for recognition.
With a career spanning three decades, the Swedish triumvirate Grand Magus exhibited a masterful proficiency as their set commenced with the formidable โI, The Jury,โ a composition that instantaneously captivated the audience and eschewed theatrical superfluity. The anthemic โSteel Versus Steelโ emerged as a salient highlight, with Manchester demonstrably exceeding previous crowds in vocal intensity. Newer compositions, such as the titular track from their latest album “Sunraven,” garnered an equivalent intensity of reception as their canonical classics โLike the Oar Strikes the Water and the concluding epic โHammer of the Northโ brought the performance to a resounding culmination. The audience, afforded a focal role during an extended refrain, responded with a cohesive unity emblematic of heavy metal’s shared ethos.
The conclusive engagement of Orange Goblin‘s touring schedule served as an unequivocal attestation to the band’s lasting impact within the stoner metal genre. Upon Ben Ward’s entrance, his commanding physical presence and guttural vocal delivery immediately captivated Manchester, initiating their performance with “Scorpionica,” a composition that instantaneously established the prevailing ambience of robust guitar work and unyielding dynamism. Joe Hoare’s instrumental technique, characterised by its fluidity and considerable sonic weight, integrated seamlessly with the driving percussive and bass elements, thereby reinforcing Orange Goblin’s recognised excellence in live performance. The meticulously constructed setlist traversed the entirety of the band’s extensive discography, featuring universally acclaimed tracks such as “Some You Win, Some You Lose” and “The Filthy & the Few,” which incited enthusiastic collective vocalisation, alongside less frequently performed selections like “Time Travelling Blues,” demonstrating their expansive stylistic breadth. A critical component elevating this performance beyond mere nostalgic recollection was the profound symbiotic relationship between the performers and the spectators. Ward’s frank exchanges and sincere expressions of gratitude underscored the reciprocal dynamic underpinning Orange Goblin’s protracted career. The audience’s intensity, notably during the spirited encore presentation of “Red Tide Rising,” transformed the event from a standard valediction into a collective emotional release. From a production standpoint, the presentation exemplified judiciously managed intensity. As the ultimate cadences dissipated, a shared sentiment of both bereavement and appreciation permeated the space.
Orange Goblin’s culminating performance represented a commanding reaffirmation of live music’s sold-out capacity to unify, inspire, and continuously resonate. Their enduring legacy, forged through arduous effort and amplified distortion, is destined to persist long after their amplification systems have cooled. Thank you for a legendary thirty years, Orange Goblin!
