There is no denying that the first half of this year has already been insane for concerts across the UK, and, unsurprisingly, it shows no signs of slowing down. For those of us in both the North and South of Ireland, we’ve been treated to some of the year’s most exciting live debuts. Ohio metalcore heavyweights The Plot In You have now added their name to that list, making their long-awaited Belfast debut at Limelight.
The band delivered an intense, introspective and emotionally furious performance, showcasing some of their most ambitious, and in my opinion, finest material to date. With their self-titled album set for release in July, combining all entries from their acclaimed ‘Volume Series’ project into one cohesive package, the show felt like a powerful statement of intent from a band operating at the peak of their creative powers.
Starting the night off with a bang was metalcore outfit Boundaries from Connecticut. This band took me by surprise; this was my first time experiencing them and they definitely left their mark, delivering an absolutely crushing, chaotic set. Whether you were like me and hearing the band for the first time, or one of the fans who specifically came out to witness their Irish debut alongside The Plot In You, it was clear that Boundaries made the most of the opportunity and won over plenty of new listeners.
Lead singer Matthew McDougal delivered unrelenting guttural vocal growls over the band’s punishingly loud guitar and bass breakdowns throughout the set, making it abundantly clear that they were determined to get the crowd moving whether they liked it or not. The venue didn’t let up; the energy in the room was off the charts. Boundaries commanded the stage with a domineering presence, almost as if this was the band’s very own headline show.
Throughout the performance, the band constantly urged the audience on, shouting for two-stepping, circle pits and the inevitable wall of death that they had been building up to the entire set, ultimately devouring the entire room, myself included, as I was rag-dolled around the audience camera in hand. Anything for the shot.
Bassist Nathan Calcagno summed up the night perfectly, exclaiming to the audience: “This is the youngest you’ll ever f**king be, right now, in this room. Wake up. Show me a circle pit.” The crowd immediately embraced the mantra, launching into a frenzy and giving the band exactly the reaction they wanted. The moment encapsulated the energy that Boundaries brought to the stage throughout their set, with the crowd responding to every command and proving that the band’s Irish debut was a resounding success.
It was finally time for the night’s headliners. The Plot In You took to the stage against a backwall curtain featuring artwork from their current ‘Volume Series’ projects, illuminated by a distinctive light-bar stage setup and a raised drum platform. It was refreshing to see a band put genuine effort into their stage production at Limelight, Belfast, with the visual presentation adding another layer to the atmosphere and heightening the anticipation for what was about to unfold.
The Plot In You spared no time, launching into ‘Divide’, blasting reverbing guitar breakdowns throughout the audience’s bodies while frontman Landon Tewers showcased the full extent of his remarkable vocal range, delivering his signature emotionally crippling clean vocals and throat-cutting screams. He makes it look so effortlessly easy. Seeing Tewers perform live is genuinely impressive; years of refinement have elevated his voice to a level that not only matches the studio recordings but, at times, surpasses them. His vocal delivery was nothing short of exceptional, setting the tone for the rest of the evening.
‘You Get One’ is played next, one of the band’s most recent releases in the ‘Volume Series’. In a live setting this song is an absolutely haunting, chaotic beast, almost instantly setting the audience into a violent frenzy. The stage was set from this point onwards: the pit was open, tops were already off, the room was heating up. You could feel the atmosphere shifting and building. The Plot In You essentially injected adrenaline straight into an already amped-up crowd, and from the photo pit I could see the audience just snaking back and forth.
The stage bathed in blue light sets the tone for ‘Pretend’, one of the chiller songs in The Plot In You‘s discography, yet still somewhat intense. It was probably the briefest respite the audience would receive, because what came next was one of the standout moments of the night. Tewers bellows out a throat-shredding scream, holding it for as long as possible, as the band launches straight into ‘Don’t Look Away’. I couldn’t help but stand there in awe at his vocals; it’s shocking how this man still has a voice after belting that out every night. While I stood captivated, the audience was giving its very best performance, screaming back at the band while unleashing pure carnage in the massive mosh pit that had formed in the middle of the room, taking up an enormous space pushed all the way back to the lighting engineer’s desk.
Continuing the onslaught of soul-crushing songs, The Plot In You rip through ‘Spare Me’, ‘Face Me’ and the irresistibly catchy yet deeply vulnerable ‘Closure’, another personal favourite from the band’s recent run of singles. While the performance itself was captivating, one of the most striking aspects of the night was watching the crowd’s reaction to these songs.
Throughout the set, it became increasingly clear just how deeply The Plot In You‘s music resonates with their audience. Fans sang every word directly to their friends, embraced one another and immersed themselves completely in the lyrics. In some cases, the emotional weight of the songs was visibly overwhelming, with tears streaming down the faces of audience members across the room. Moments like these highlighted the unique connection the band has cultivated with their fanbase. The Plot In You‘s music goes beyond heavy riffs and vocals; it speaks to personal experiences, struggles and emotions that listeners see reflected in their own lives. That emotional authenticity has become a defining characteristic of the band, and it was on full display throughout the evening.
The Plot In You continued to pour their hearts out through ‘All That I Can Give’, ‘Forgotten’ and ‘The One You Loved’. This section of the concert must have been someone’s kingdom come, especially for anyone who recently went through a breakup. I’ll pour one out for you, just in case you’re reading this.
‘Disposable Fix’ rears its head, the song that first introduced me to The Plot In You, so finally getting to experience it live was a massive highlight. The breakdown within ‘Disposable Fix’ feels like a transformative, out-of-body experience; when that booming bass breakdown drops, it reverbs throughout your entire body and is such a standout moment in a live setting.
As the night began drawing towards its conclusion, Landon Tewers took a moment to address the Belfast crowd. Speaking about this being the band’s first ever visit to Ireland, he expressed both his gratitude for the warm reception and his excitement at finally performing in a country they had never previously experienced. It was a sincere and heartfelt interaction that further strengthened the connection between the band and an audience that had embraced them from the moment they stepped on stage.
Before the finale, The Plot In You play ‘Been Here Before’, ‘Silence’ and ‘Left Behind’, with fans once again singing their hearts out back to Tewers, moshing and dancing before the band takes them straight into their most monumental song to date, ‘FEEL NOTHING’. Everyone knew it was coming; everyone was preparing themselves for this moment, bellowing back every lyric to Tewers, the audience drowning him out at times, which is truly impressive in its own right.
The Plot In You sit in a very exciting position within modern metalcore. Over the past few years, the Ohio outfit have evolved from a respected name within the scene into one of its most influential and defining acts. While comparisons to the genre’s established giants are never made lightly, there is little doubt that The Plot In You have earned their place alongside many of metalcore’s most celebrated bands.
Their continued growth feels entirely deserved, built upon a catalogue that balances crushing heaviness with raw emotional vulnerability in a way few bands can replicate. Judging by the reception they received in Belfast, their upward trajectory shows no signs of slowing down. If this performance was any indication of what the future holds, then The Plot In You‘s best days may still be ahead of them, and I, for one, cannot wait to see where they go next.
