2025 is here and with it comes the grand return of Lacuna Coil, the Italian gothic metal band has returned withย their 10th studio album ‘Sleepless Empire’, an album that feels like a culmination of their nearly three-decade journey.
The Milanese gothic metal veterans have crafted a record that is both a reflection of their storied past and a bold step into uncharted territory. With its exceptional orchestration, crushing riffs, and haunting vocal interplay,ย ‘Sleepless Empire’ย is a testament to the bandโs ability to evolve without losing sight of their roots.
From the outset, the tone is set with ‘The Siege’ delivering ethereal vocalisations from Cristina Scabbia, soon giving way to Andrea Ferroโs guttural growls and a barrage of heavy guitars. Itโs a cinematic introduction, one that feels like the opening scene of a dark, sprawling epic. From there, the record unfolds like a gothic tapestry, weaving together themes of modern alienation, spiritual introspection, and the relentless pace of a tech-driven world.
At the heart ofย ‘Sleepless Empire’ย is the vocal dynamic between Scabbia and Ferro. Their interplay has always been a defining feature of Lacuna Coilโs sound, but here, it reaches new heights. Scabbiaโs voice is a force of natureโequal parts power and vulnerabilityโwhile Ferroโs harsh delivery has never been more visceral. Tracks like ‘Scarecrow’ and ‘In Nomine Patris’ showcase their ability to balance beauty and brutality, creating moments that are as emotionally resonant as they are intense.
Whilst it was no surprise we were going to be hearing a few guest tracks on this album, the punch they pack is far more noticeable when listening through the album in its entirety, but nevertheless, they never defer from the band’s signature sound. Randy Blythe of Lamb of God lends his signature snarl to ‘Hosting the Shadow,’ a track that simmers with tension before erupting into a fury of riffs and screams. Meanwhile, Ash Costello of New Years Day joins Scabbia on ‘In the Mean Time,’ a thunderous duet that crackles with raw energy.
The album as a whole is a meticulously crafted marvel, blending orchestral swells and intricate guitar work into an expansive yet intimate soundscape. While its precision occasionally sacrifices spontaneityโtracks like ‘Gravity’ tend to lean into formulaic nu-metal tropesโthe album soars when it hits its stride. The title track merges gothic grandeur with urgency, while ‘Sleep Paralysis’ mesmerises with Middle Eastern-inspired melodies and haunting rhythms. The closing track, ‘Never Dawn,’ delivers a crushing riff and a foreboding yet triumphant finale.
Thematically, the album explores modern alienationโsocial mediaโs endless scroll, the erosion of authenticity, and the search for meaning in a sleepless world. These themes are rendered with personal depth, avoiding clichรฉs. Lacuna Coil refines rather than reinvents, pushing boundaries while staying true to their identity. The result is a layered, rewarding listen that reveals new details with each spin.
For a band in their third decade,ย ‘Sleepless Empire’ย is a monumental album. Itโs a dark, cinematic masterpiece like no other. One that demands to be heard, felt, and cherished. Lacuna Coilโs empire may be sleepless, but itโs far from tired.
