This Is Doom Trap has been on our radar ever since the German trap metal sensation burst into our playlists with her ferocious and infectious track ‘MONTANA’ (featuring Yeti Bones of Ho99o9) earlier this year.
Since then, the queen of trap metal has continued to defy expectations with new releases and live performances throughout the summer. Those wondering if her third outing lives up to the hype can rest assured that This Is Doom Trap is a force to be reckoned with—unafraid to mix things up and experiment with a sound that Mimi has meticulously crafted and perfected. Many, including myself, consider it an exciting new revolution in the alt scene.
The album offers a versatile experience, with moments of throbbing hip-hop beats and unapologetically harsh electro vibes, alongside twisted metal and grime-influenced sounds that evoke the London warehouse districts she calls home. Time and time again you’re pulled into the deep, twisted mind of Barks, delivering a seriously edgy yet cohesive listening experience.
This Is Doom Trap could easily overwhelm with its hard-hitting metal techno beats, and the first half of the album does so with great effect (prepare yourself for the opening track ‘FSU’—you’ll want to crank this one up to 11).
But it’s in the B-side where we really get a taste of Barks’ melodies, and this is where the album truly shines, bringing out its quirkiness and flow. Notably, ‘DISGUSTED’ and ‘FINAL DESTINATION DEATH WITHOUT SATISFACTION’ offer some of the more broadly accessible moments, with slower passages that still maintain the dark and menacing tone. The hard-hitting beats keep these tracks memorable in an album otherwise packed with heavy bangers.
