Located in the vibrant centre of Manchester, a renowned venue, known for hosting extraordinary appearances by distinguished and iconic musical groups, was poised to deliver a memorable evening. The focus of attention was on the esteemed Swiss band, which was celebrating the release of their highly anticipated album, Inquisition. Expectations were elevated, and the atmosphere was charged with excitement on that brisk evening, foreshadowing an exceptional showcase of powerful metal performances that promised to leave an enduring impact. This event represented an invaluable opportunity to witness musical excellence.
The German power metal band, HAMMER KING, invigorated the event with a stunning performance that captivated an enthusiastic audience. This year, the band celebrated an anniversary during which they solidified their position in the metal music landscape. In the previous year, they released their latest full-length album, Make Metal Royal Again, as well as a remastered edition of their debut album, Kingdom of the Hammer King, both of which have garnered significant appreciation from their dedicated fanbase. From the initial note, HAMMER KING infused the venue with vibrant energy, enhanced by compelling theatrics that engaged both the audience and performers alike. In this festive ambience, the band passionately emphasised the importance of community within the metal genre, advocating for inclusivity while expressing sincere gratitude to every fan present, along with those who were listening from afar. Their ability to elevate the atmosphere seamlessly set the stage for the headlining act, highlighting their pivotal role as the supporting band. To further enrich the overall experience, select attendees were delighted to receive exclusive plastic tokens featuring the band’s name and logo, which will undoubtedly serve as cherished memorabilia.
Following a brief intermission, the Academy 3 prepared for the performance of BURNING WITCHES. The audience responded with increasing applause and cheers as the members—ROMANA KALKUHL (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), JEANINE GROB (bass), LALA FRISCHKNECHT (drums), LAURA GULDEMOND (lead vocals), and COURTNEY COX (lead guitar, backing vocals)—entered the stage in succession. The ensemble commenced their performance with “Soul Eater,” a track from their latest release, Inquisition. The momentum of the concert escalated with each subsequent song. Notably, GULDEMOND wore a devil mask during the popular track “Dance with the Devil,” just three songs into their set.
The band’s commanding stage presence encapsulated the essence of historical witches, thereby creating a captivating experience for the audience through this all-female ensemble. Throughout their performance, they utilised various props, including masks and a simulated severed head, and engaged directly with audience members at multiple points. BURNING WITCHES effectively captivated all attendees, solidifying their status as a formidable presence within the heavy metal genre. At the conclusion of their set, which featured an extensive lineup of fifteen songs, the audience demonstrated their reluctance to part with the Swiss quintet, enthusiastically expressing their appreciation through sustained cheers and applause—an indication of the city’s eagerness for future performances.
Over a decade in the industry, BURNING WITCHES has experienced multiple lineup changes; however, it is evident that the current formation ranks among the strongest in the band’s history. With powerful vocals and captivating riffs, the band consistently surprises audiences with innovative techniques that highlight their musical talents. Consequently, it was unsurprising that they have firmly established themselves as a cornerstone of the contemporary heavy metal scene within just ten years.
