For 40 years, GWAR have drenched audiences in blood, satire, and chaos. Blothar the Berserker talks dinosaurs with tragic backstories, apocalyptic AI plans, and why the band has no intention of leaving Earth’s garbage heap anytime soon…

Naturally, we had to begin by asking about GWAR’s plans to return to the UK. Blothar’s response was as unpredictable as the band’s blood-soaked stage shows.

“Well, we don’t have plans right now to go to the UK. I think really, the next time is going to be next summer. That’s when we’ll be there in the UK, and hopefully we’ll have something new out at that time as well. We have something new now, but we’ll have another full-length album out or something.”

The conversation quickly turned to The Return of Gor Gor, GWAR’s latest EP, which celebrates the band’s 40th anniversary with the return of their infamous pet Tyrannosaurus rex, Gor.

“Well, it’s a GWAR record, so of course you’ve got a comic book. GWAR was founded on comics, underground comics. It’s always been a part of what we do. On this record, the story of Gor Gor, our pet T-Rex, ties into the band’s 40th anniversary. Gor Gor has always been with us from the beginning. He’s sort of our version of Godzilla. And that’s what the EP is about. That’s what the stage show right now is about. Gor Gor comes back and, really, you can think of it almost as the return of GWAR, too.”

When pressed about saving Gor Gor from existential turmoil, Blothar followed with an insight into the mission in true GWAR fashion.

“Well, to save our dinosaur from a life of being a lizard… I don’t know, I mean, there really is no saving the dinosaur, I think. Really, you need to save yourselves. From a dinosaur. Gor Gor is an elemental force, and he simply wants to kill. There’s no judgment in that. It’s just a healthy distrust and rage towards mankind. So he doesn’t really need saving as much as he needs… he needs to be put down.”

He then elaborated on Gor’s tragic backstory, a bizarre, R-rated twist on Dumbo that somehow lands better than Tim Burton’s 2019 adaptation.

“Gor’s mother was killed by a circus train. And then, unfortunately, Gor is orphaned, and he’s out there in the world, spinning around. He needs to find his place. He strikes out on his own and decides that he’s going to become a prostitute. But the problem is, if you’re a Tyrannosaurus rex and your job is giving blowjobs in truck stops, chances are you’re not going to have a lot of repeat customers.”

Moving swiftly on, Blothar shared with us his thoughts on GWAR’s upcoming appearances at Comic-Con, where chaos reigns supreme.

“Oh, God, the furries. Definitely. All the confusing sex that happens in the hotel rooms, that’s my favourite thing about Comic-Con. Just the whole story of ‘who knows what the hell is going on?’ Every time there’s a Comic-Con, you’ve got all these celebrities, where it’s questionable why they’re even celebrities. And they’re all sitting around judging each other, which is wonderful.

I mean, it’s fun to be around people like Diana Troi from Star Trek, right? But who cares, really?

The best part is meeting washed-up celebrities. Definitely. We met Chewbacca there. Amazing. Who doesn’t want to meet Chewbacca? And he was angry, too. And now he’s dead. Yeah, Peter Mayhew, he was like eight feet tall.”

As for the future, GWAR has a slew of projects bubbling, including an AI-powered video game that’s as darkly ambitious as you’d expect.

“The AI thing on our website? Yeah, that’s real. But honestly, AI’s destined to destroy humanity anyway, so we want to get in on the ground floor of that apocalypse. If we abuse it now, maybe later it’ll respect us.”

And that’s not all. There’s also a full-length feature film in the works, described by Blothar as “GWAR’s version of The Blues Brothers.”

“Basically, it’s about getting the band back together and hitting the road across the country. Sort of like a road trip movie, but with GWAR chaos.”

Meanwhile, their documentary Memory of War is already out, diving deep into the human thralls behind the band and the creative madness it takes to keep the legacy alive.

If you thought you’d seen the last of this extraterrestrial crew, think again, GWAR has no plans to leave Earth anytime soon.

“We’re sort of like expatriates at this point. We’ve made our home here, in the garbage heap that is planet Earth. We won’t be going back anytime soon. For a while, we tried, kind of like Gilligan’s Island, but we always failed miserably. Then we realised, you know what? We actually like it here. On this planet, we can do anything we want, and there aren’t really any real consequences.”

And what does Blothar love most about Earth?

“It’s not humans, right? We like animals, sea creatures, dolphins, and whales. Some of my best friends are whales. And manatees, just look at a manatee sometime. That’s the real joy, the nature of this planet. Humans? They’re unnatural. Destroying them seems like a job for GWAR.”

Before signing off, Blothar dropped a few more gems: his preferred mode of transport is a unicycle, because “Riding a dinosaur is just so inconvenient. They stop a lot… to eat shit.”

And for the future?

“Well, I think we’re going to get a cat. Hell yeah. Just a band cat. We’ve got a dinosaur already, and dinosaurs are a pain in the ass. You don’t want to deal with a dinosaur’s litter box. A cat’s litter box? Much more manageable.”

With that, Blothar signed off, leaving behind the familiar trail of absurdity, carnage, and the promise of more GWAR madness ahead.
