Experiencing King Diamond live at the Manchester Academy was nothing short of a mesmerising night, blending the raw power of classic heavy metal with theatrical Vaudeville-inspired horror. The atmosphere was thick with anticipation, reminiscent of the chilling aura of Saint Luciferโs Hospital, as the diverse crowdโranging from devoted long-time fans to fresh newcomersโcame together, united by the timeless music and haunting storytelling of the heavy metal legend. The stage design was a striking spectacle, enhanced by the Academy’s intimate ambience that made it feel almost familial.ย
As the lights dimmed, Abigailโs coffin dominated the centre stage, setting a foreboding tone for the evening. With a flourish, King Diamond โsacrificedโ a doll of Abigail, which perfectly segued into the thunderous and electrifying opening chords of “Arrival.” This was immediately followed by the fan-favourite tracks “A Mansion In Darkness” and “Halloween,” which ignited fervour in the front row and prompted the Manchester audience to join in, their voices rising joyfully, at times high enough to reverberate against the venueโs walls.
The setlist was masterfully curated, flowing seamlessly from one song to the next, with moments designed for audience interaction, such as during โSleepless Nights.โ The energy peaked during “Voodoo,” a track that brought a lively pulse to the night and, when the band debuted “Spider Lily,” a new song that comfortably nestled among their revered classics, the excitement was palpable, generating buzz around the anticipated upcoming releases from both King Diamond and Mercyful Fate.ย
As the night unfolded, fans were treated to a series of striking theme changes and vivid reenactments embodying the signature horror that King Diamond is celebrated for. From the opening notes, King Diamond showcased their distinctive identity, transcending the boundaries of a conventional metal band with their intricate theatrical storytelling and horror-centric concept albums. The iconic figure behind the band captivated with his commanding stage presence, imbuing the grand production with an intimate feel that drew everyone closer together.
